Two for Tuesday – The Temps

Jun 2, 2025

(From 7/9/219) I guess technically this should be “Three for Tuesday” because all 3 of these songs need to be grouped together.  They were all written by Roger Penzabene as a testament to his love for his wife.

He was a childhood friend and neighbor of Cornelius Grant, with whom he wrote “You’re My Everything”. After Grant became musical director for the Temptations, Penzabene continued to contribute songs for the group, and for other Motown acts.

After learning of her cheating Roger was heartbroken. He then wrote “I Wish It Would Rain” describing his pain, then finally “I Could Never Love Another” to finish the trilogy of how he felt. Unable to handle the extreme pain and unwilling to leave his wife, he wrote the last two songs as personal statements to her, publicizing the pain she caused him. On New Year’s Eve 1967, a week after the release of “I Wish It Would Rain“, he committed suicide by gunshot at the age of 23.

I Could Never Love Another” was only recorded in the studio and never live anywhere.  But just for completeness – and if you’re a fan of that song – I included it at the bottom.  You gotta love David Ruffin starting off with  “girl I can’t be-liieeve my ears”!  Enjoy…

PS.  If you’ve got NetFlix, their movie is available there and definitely worth viewing if you’re into Motown.
