I had the honor of mixing monitors for B.B. King back in the 80’s when I was working for a sound company. His stage manager did the sound check but told me that B.B. was almost deaf in one ear so turn the monitors up as loud as I could get them and he would let me know if it was OK. When B.B. started playing his first song, he looked over to me and gave me a smile and a thumbs-up! As he walked off the stage, he came over and shook my hand and said thanks. Not many at his level do that sort of thing.
Regarding this Sing Sing prison performance, B.B. King said in an interview with NPR: “I’ve played a lot of prisons since but Sing Sing is the only one that I can remember the name of and the reason is because I was scared. I thought it was the end of my life.”
