Two for Tuesday – Pieces of a Dream

Aug 19, 2025

I was listening to Sirius radio’s Jazz channel the other day and heard these guys which brought back some great memories.  Some of you know that back in the late 70’s thru mid-80’s (before I figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up) I did sound for local bands and at one point worked for a sound company that handled some pretty big acts and concerts.  Pieces of a Dream is a Philly jazz group that they had a contract with and who was produced and mentored by saxophonist, Grover Washington.  I didn’t do the main house sound for Pieces but usually mixed monitors.  One night when Grover’s monitor mixer had family issues, I filled in then got to go on a brief tour with Grover up and down the east coast.  Super nice guy who died way too young.

I kinda remember the concert in Philly below (but it was the 80’s!) and hoped I would see myself stage right off to the side of their bassist, Napoleon, but it’s kinda dark.  James Lloyd is an amazing genius on the keyboards.  He played this one song on his synth and as he was playing, he walked completely around it and kept playing but from the other side of the keyboards!  Anyway, here’s a couple of videos I found of them on YouTube.

I had a hard time finding on with both Pieces of a Dream and Grover Washington.  Sorry about the video quality but the sound is still great.
