Ken Curtis (Festus on Gunsmoke)

Some of you have heard me ramble about my Gunsmoke addiction.  Fans of the show will recognize “Boss Billiards” – the old name of my website when I had a Boss 302 Mustang – as the name of Dodge City’s local pool hall.

Many people don’t know that Ken Curtis – Festus – was actually a pretty good singer.

He was lead singer in the Sons of the Pioneers back in the 50’s before Gunsmoke. And before that, he was with the Tommy Dorsey band in 1941, succeeding Frank Sinatra as vocalist until Dick Haymes contractually replaced Sinatra.  Here’s a trio from those days when he didn’t have the scrufty beard and accent.   The first is from his Sons of the Pioneers days and the second is just a cute little ditty.   Enjoy!
