Sunday Soul with Etta

Oct 26, 2025

Let’s go back 50 years for this one.  Most everyone is familiar with Etta James and her rendition of “At Last “- a standard at just about every wedding I’ve ever attended.  But I actually like this song that she co-wrote and released in 1967 better.  This is a live performance from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1975.

James’s deep and earthy voice is considered to have bridged the gap between R&B and Rock & Roll.  She won three Grammy Awards for her albums and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001. She also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.  Rolling Stone magazine ranked James number 22 on its 2008 list of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”. Not bad credentials!

In a pool-related side note…many say that she is the daughter of Minnesota Fats — do ya know that bit of trivia?
