(From 4/6/2019) I’ve run across quite a few videos from “1-Hit Wonder” bands (mostly from the 70’s) so I’ll be rolling them out over the next few weeks just to mix things up a bit. “How Long” by the British band, Ace, certainly falls into that category but also has another unique quality. Most people — myself included all thru the 70’s — thought this song was about a girlfriend caught cheating.
In reality, lead singer Paul Carrack composed the song upon discovering that bassist Terry Comer had been secretly working with other bands. Comer returned to Ace in time to play on the song. Carrack’s vocal talent carried him into playing with other bands like Roxy Music, Squeeze (he sang “Tempted“), Roger Waters’ (of Pink Floyd) backup band, and Mike & the Mechanics. He’s still out there singing today as evidenced by the video after the original one below from the mid-70’s.
Here’s Paul Carrack from 2012 still singing “How Long” — with a little less hair and what I think is a lot richer sounding voice. Enjoy!!
